My dreadlocks are 3 months today! The first picture was taken at 57 days and the second pic was taken today. Most of my roots are quite knotted. I am pleased with this. However, I’ve A LOT of loops. I mean A LOT.

[Edit] There’s a bit of shrinkage going on.

Day 75 + Chunk photo bomb

Day 65

Behold my messy hair! I sometimes wish I didn’t have black hair because you can hardly see the individual locks. They really are there!

Here’s a better view of my hair and me wearing a malong (a tube skirt) my mom got me when she visited the Philippines. It can be worn in many different ways. Here, I tied it over one shoulder.

My how my hair has changed! The photo on the left was taken just 2 days after I twist and ripped my whole head. The pic on the right is how my hair looks today. As I’ve mentioned before, I started with about 24 dreadlocks but some of them wanted to split so now i have about 40. I know it’s hard to see but they are there! ^_^

What do you think?

If you have dreads, how is your journey going?

Scalp Health & Dreadlocks

I did a bit of research and found out that I may produce excess sebum in my scalp. My hair gets itchy, even before I got locks but only when it was time to wash again. After getting dreadlocks, I noticed my fingernails would pick up this white or grey gunk when I scratched. Remember, I said that washing with baking soda left white gunk in my hair. Well, it seems that because of the hard water, BS is not cleaning my scalp! So, my solutions are:

  1. Stop using the Garnier Fructis Pure Clean shampoo. I was told by fellow dreadhead, rawrimashadowcreeper, that Garnier shampoos have softeners in them that leave a film on the strands. Obviously, it didn’t help with my excess sebum problem.
  2. Use baking soda again but this time, boil the water and let BS dissolve. Let cool and use! Hope this works! Solution found on this blog post.
  3. Rinse with apple cider vinegar plus rosemary and mint for the delicious fragrance. I read that this helps tighten pores here: Normalize excessive sebum secretions. Please be warned that the tips may not be applicable to dreadlocks.

Hopefully these solutions will help my scalp!

I want to thank everybody who responded to my previous post. I think I’ll give natural bar soap a try in the future, just to change things a bit. I may also give head and shoulders a try if the above don’t work for me!

Put my hair up in a bun and saw my little heart accessory sticking out. Thought it was cute and took a pic.
Dreadlocks update!
So I started out with several large sections but today I decided to split five locks. I don’t want a lot of huge dreads on my head. I had about 25 locks and now, I have 40.

itu answered your question My baby locks turned 1 month today! As you can see…

Crotchet hook, don’t do it often it can be damaging!

Thanks for the tip and warning. I read about that when I was researching different methods. I might consider if at 1 year I still have unlocked hair. Hopefully that won’t be the case. I’m trying not to stress out about my hair and so far, so good!
