For all those that think being a “gypsy” is so grand, take a look at this website.

Voices of Roma is a wonderful site RUN by the Rromani people, and provide a wonderful education as to the TRUTH about the Roma. Because by using the word “gypsy” is only perpetuating the stereotype and the romantasized image of them.

The swirling skirts, fortune telling, theiving, sexy, image of them is a FAR cry from the very real and current hell that they go through. 

Persecution, racism, violence, not being able to get a proper education, or a well paying job because of their race. Sound familiar??

As many words are offensive (i.e. the n word, spick, wet back, kike, etc), so is the word “gypsy” to the Rroma people.

Before I started learning, I was like many young girls, who thought Esmeralda was the greatest thing, that what Disney portrayed was the right way.  Now, I get uncomfortable with the word, be it used by every day people, those here on Tumblr, or hell even those in the belly dance community that has “gypsy” in their troupe name.

So before you start fancying yourself as a “gypsy”, do some bloody research.
