Book: Kushiel’s Legacy, the first 3 books. So good.
Movie: I wouldn’t say I have favorites, just movies I really enjoyed. Most recently, I quite enjoyed The Avengers.

I would spend it with my biological father. I have never met him and sadly, he passed away not too long ago. We would do whatever it is fathers and daughters do together.

I’m seriously considering getting a baybayin tattoo designed by Christian Cabuay of baybayin.com. This tattoo will say something like “Always Dance”, just something to remind me to dance everyday. I LOVE Christian’s brush style and think it looks great on skin.

I really need to start learning Tagalog again. My knowledge of the language is 1st grade at best...

I really need to start learning Tagalog again. My knowledge of the language is 1st grade at best ‘cause I left when I just started 2nd grade. I will need to start communicating with my family using Tagalog.

Bah, I feel like I shouldn’t be answering questions at ilove-bellydance. I’m still learning, although I’ve been dancing since ‘09. I’m not a professional yet but I’ve learned a lot and I want to share what I know. I think the best policy is to defer to others or research if I’m not completely sure. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do.

I wouldn’t be here without my mom’s tremendous hard work, love, and support. While she was working to get the rest of her family to the US, my Lolo and Lola were taking care of me. I loved those days. I love my family!

Belly Dance Practice Schedule

If I want to become a pro, I need to start practicing & conditioning way more often so I’ve come up with a schedule. This schedule takes into account I have work, and a college class I’m taking.

If I can, I will go to the Wednesday class with Natalie Brown. Otherwise, here’s my schedule using DVDs (Rachel Brice’s Serpentine, Asharah’s DVD, Sharon Kihara’s DVD, and more). I hope to add Zoe Jake’s From A to Zoe soon.

“This one is very serious, guys:

I came upon these two on the sidewalk. They were having a conversation. “Excuse me,” I said, addressing the girl: “I’m sorry to interrupt, but is there anyway I can take your photo?”

“Why would you want my photo?” she asked.

“Because you look beautiful,” I said. And she did. She was Sudanese. There is a very distinct beauty among people from the Sudan, and she was filled up with it. Suddenly the man cut in:

“I was just telling her she was beautiful,” he said.

Naively, I assumed I had just walked up on one stranger giving a compliment to another. I wanted to capture the moment. “Let me take your photograph together,” I said. The man seemed reluctant, he started smiling nervously and inching away. But the girl called him back.

“Come take a picture with me,” she said. Encouraged by her attention, he returned. She put her arm around him, and I took the photo.

As I examined the photos on my camera, the man started whispering to the girl. She answered him in a loud voice: “I told you! I’m not that kind of girl.” She seemed agitated now. Finally sensing that I had misread the situation, I stepped between them. The man began hurrying down the sidewalk.

When the man left, the girl’s demeanor changed completely. She seemed shaken. Her eyes were tearing up. “He just offered me five hundred dollars to go out with him,” she said. “And then when I said ‘no,’ he offered me one thousand. Why does this always happen to me?”

“It happens a lot?” I asked.

“All the time,” she said. “I’m sorry I’m getting emotional. I just can’t go out of my house without this kind of thing happening. I have a son. I’m a mother. I would never degrade myself like that. I just don’t understand why this keeps happening.”

“Do you mind if I tell this story?” I asked.

“Please,” she said. “Tell it.”

Let’s hope this man, and all men, realize the emotional damage they are inflicting on the women they try to buy. In the meantime, feel free to SHARE.*

The graduation ceremony went well. So glad to be done (sort of, I have one more class to take this summer). My mom and lolo came down to visit for a couple of days. We had a great time! We spent the night at a really cozy, Victorian style bed and breakfast. Before they left, we went to a Aiken but the visit was cut short because of thunderstorm. Blah!

Still, I’m glad my family was finally able to meet my husband’s. Everybody mutually liked each other! Phew.

Art Activity Idea

I have a wide range of interests when it comes to creating art. I enjoy drawing with graphite, digital painting, creating pixel art, and creating vectors. However, because of the many interests I have, I find it hard to focus. So, I’m going to dedicate one month to each of the different mediums.

May is vector month! My goal is to finish the mermaid portrait I’ve been posting wips of. I will no longer posts WIPS. The next time you see this mermaid, she’ll be DONE.

Gotta say, this has been one of the best Charlotte visits! So many things happened. I spent time with family, celebrated my Lolo’s 90th birthday, reunited with an old best friend, and enjoyed some awesome Filipino food. I’ll be posting some pictures from the celebration, mostly of hula dancers. Before that however…

Beats Antique Concert

What a show! As a belly dancer, I feel so rejuvenated. Zoe & Auberon were beautiful and so inspiring to watch in person. Every time they were on stage, I could not take my eyes off them. Unfortunately, my camera battery died and I forgot to bring a spare so I was only able to record the first song, Alto (coming soon).

They “ended” their set with “We Swarm” with Zoe & Auberon dancing and playing the snare drums. We asked for more and they performed two more songs, the last song being “Cat Skillz”, complete with animal and robot masks! Also, because it was Cinco De Mayo (eye roll), they brought out pinatas filled with goodies. What a fun way to end the show!

I can probably say where the improv and where the choreo is at in this music. The very beginning and near the end, was that improv? Because I noticed that you did something that I do: your arms tend to stay at your sides, making crazy circles with your hands. The choreo was astounding (because I really am starting to learn about choreo), and the movements really reflected the music. The improv…. seemed a bit rushed and hectic. Feel the music rather than think about what move you’re going to use next. LIVE the moment, not the next one! It spoils the surprise!

In all honesty, keep your arms in mind while doing improv (though that’s hard to do because we usually think about where to put our arms in choreo) as they are still a part of expression. If you want to show off your core area, frame your body or move them out of the way. If you are going to do something with the upper body, use a same level or higher stance with the arms. If you are going to do something with the lower half, tuck them behind you, frame your hips, frame your head, or clasp the elbows behind or over your head. And with layering, do something with the lower half and have the arms doing a slow or soft snake arm.

And remember to keep with the tempo, otherwise it will look off and a bit awkward because if you don’t, the audience will notice and get confused on who to follow musically and it turns them off.

Great performance! Try listening to the mood of the music and let it take you in rather than just hearing the music and thinking about what to do next!

Lady, you know how to lay it down! Yes, the arms. Oh deer god, I definitely need to work on my arms with regards to improvisation and appreciate the tips. The beginning was actually choreo but like lelephantsnail said, I must have been nervous because I felt sloppy and watching it now, yeah I didn’t execute the choreo as well as I hoped.

I definitely agree with your comment about feeling the music rather than just executing movements. I’ll work on that! Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated!
