Here’s a fun little story:

One day, after I’d been at the fatchance studio as a student for about eight months or so, this new girl shows up to level 1 class. Since by that point I’ve made a hobby of checking out new classmates, I proceed to take a full inventory: she’s fairly plain looking, a ponytail full of wavy, light brown hair, no make up on, a red short-sleeved choli, and a old jaipur skirt that looked like it hadn’t seen much recent use. I notice she’s got some hardcore-looking skull tattoo on her belly just peeking out over the top of her skirt, and a half-sleeve barely visible outside the hem of her choli. Cool, nothing particularly interesting here, I thought.

We end up dancing a slow improv together in a duet. Without stopping to introduce ourselves, we just pair up silently and I politely motion with my hand to suggest she take the lead position. She looks at me with a face that says, “I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ll go ahead and try it,” and proceeds to lead me through the steps. She’s not half bad, I remember thinking to myself as I watched her back and copied her movements. Hmm, her taxeem is kind of…fusion-y.

The duet ends. Our eyes meet, we smile at one another in acknowledgement of having shared the dance, and then class is over. She glides over to speak with the teacher for a moment, and then is gone. I stay in the studio in preparation for the next class. A classmate rushes over:

“Oh my god,” she says. “How was dancing with Kami Liddle?!” 

“What? Kami Liddle? Where?”

“With you! You were dancing with her!”

“I was?! That was her? Oh my god…”

Needless to say, she didn’t look quite like she does in this picture. And so humble! I’m still kicking myself over that one. Thank god I at least let her lead!
